“I was super bummed when my JCM800 died on me one day.  I had no idea what was wrong.  Andy quickly diagnosed the problem and had me up and running in no time!  He also proposed a gain modification, which I was more than happy to try out.  Before Andy modified my JCM800, life was dull and boring.  My sound was loud,  but lacking in the gain and grind that I was looking for.  After Andy’s mod, my JCM800 was in full on beast mode.  There was gain for days!!!  Thanks Andy!!!” - Keith M.

Keith loaned his prized 2203 JCM 800 to someone for a recording session, and the amp came back fried.  The output transformer was nuked, power tubes were burned up and the amp was a goner.  We had a chance to audition a number of output transformers and picked one we both liked based on its balance of tone and texture.  This, plus a cap-job and a complete re-tube and the amp was back up and running.

But Keith's playing style needed something a little more heavy.  Instead of loading up the preamp with tons of gain, I carefully crafted gain increases stage by stage, while adding in a dose of bottom end to make it roar.  JCMs also have a tendency to be a bit harsh in the high-end.  Most people just clip the bright cap on the preamp volume pot, but that diminishes the vibe of the amp when not running wide open.  Instead, I worked to attenuate the super high-order odd harmonics, which preserved the bite of the amp whithout it ever getting harsh.  The result was enormous sound, loads of gain on tap and just about the best sounding JCM 800 I've ever heard.  Thanks Keith for the kind words and the chance to work on this amazing amp.
